Orientations of planar cataclasite zones in the Chicxulub peak ring as a ground truth for peak ring formation models

چکیده
Hypervelocity impact cratering is an important geologic process but the rarity of large terrestrial craters on Earth and limited technical options to study processes in laboratory hinders our understanding large-scale processes. Drill core recovered from peak ring Chicxulub crater during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP)/International Continental scientific Drilling (ICDP) Expedition 364 provides opportunity examine target rock deformation thus, assess models this regard. Using oriented computer tomography (CT) scans line scan images core, we present orientations mm-to-cm-scale planar cataclasite ultracataclasite zones deformed granitoid ring. In upper 470 m rock, dip towards center, whereas directions for are approximately tangential These two consistent with expected hydrocode-modeled principal stress outward movement rocks as transient develops, inward associated collapse crater. Near base a 96 m-thick interval highly-deformed melt fragments not observed elsewhere core; has previously been interpreted imbricate thrust zone within The below have different than those block above. This observation implies differential rotation overlying final stages peak-ring formation. Our results support acoustic fluidization process, wherein blocks that vibrate or slide relative each other allow flow collapse, size coherent increases over course modification regains its cohesive strength decreases.

Chicxulub and the Exploration of Large Peak- Ring Impact Craters through Scientific Drilling
The Chicxulub crater is the only wellpreserved peak-ring crater on Earth and linked, famously, to the K-T or K-Pg mass extinction event. For the first time, geologists have drilled into the peak ring of that crater in the International Ocean Discovery Program and International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (IODP-ICDP) Expedition 364. The Chicxulub impact event, the environmental calam...
متن کاملFEASIBILITY OF PSO-ANFIS-PSO AND GA-ANFIS-GA MODELS IN PREDICTION OF PEAK GROUND ACCELERATION
In the present study, two new hybrid approaches are proposed for predicting peak ground acceleration (PGA) parameter. The proposed approaches are based on the combinations of Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy System (ANFIS) with Genetic Algorithm (GA), and with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). In these approaches, the PSO and GA algorithms are employed to enhance the accuracy of ANFIS model. To develop hy...
متن کاملThe Origin of Peak-ring Basins: Observational Framework and Path Forward in Constraining Models of Impact-basin Formation
Introduction: Impact basins provide windows into a planetary body's crustal structure and stratigraphy; however , interpreting the origin of impact basin materials requires constraints on the processes controlling basin formation and morphology. Peak-ring basins (exhibiting a rim crest and single interior ring of peaks) provide important insight into the basin-formation process, as they are tra...
